Itinerary Overview

Naxos Town is compact and easy to explore on foot, and this itinerary makes the most of that walkability. For experiences outside the town center, guided tours include transport, so there’s no need to rent a car, everything is simple and stress-free. Taxis are readily available if needed, and most pickup points are centrally located.
Over three days, you’ll sample incredible food, sail the Aegean, explore charming villages, and learn to cook like a local. Between guided adventures, you’ll have time to relax on golden beaches, wander the Old Market’s whitewashed alleys, and toast your trip from a rooftop bar with views that stretch across the harbor.
Day 1: Spend the day exploring Naxos beyond the beaches on a full-day island tour, with stops at mountain villages, historic landmarks, and local food and drink along the way. Back in Naxos Town, wind down with a taverna dinner followed by an easy evening stroll through the Old Market.
Day 2: Spend day two on an all-inclusive catamaran cruise, swimming in crystal-clear coves and savoring freshly prepared dishes on deck. Back in town, enjoy dinner before a golden-hour stroll to the Portara.
Day 3: Begin today with breakfast at Naxaki Beach Lounge and a morning at Agios Georgios Beach. Shop the Old Market before lunch at Scirocco, then join a village cooking class to prepare (and enjoy) traditional dishes.
Day 1
Morning/Afternoon – Get to know Naxos like a local on a full-day adventure

Rolling through Naxos’ countryside, this full-day sightseeing tour was the best way to experience the island’s history and coastline without stressing over directions. Each stop revealed another side of Naxos, ancient ruins, mountain villages, and hidden corners we never would have found on our own.
Our adventure began at the Temple of Demeter, where a short uphill walk led to a marble sanctuary. With the sun warming the stone and only a handful of visitors, it was easy to picture worshippers gathering here centuries ago. The entrance fee isn’t included, but it’s worth it to explore the temple.
In Damalas, we stepped into a pottery workshop where a local artisan, Manolis, effortlessly shaped clay. He shared old techniques passed down through generations, bringing Naxian craftsmanship to life. Our escort, Alex, kept us entertained as we reached Chalki, a historic village with Venetian mansions and stone pathways leading to the Vallindras distillery.
Next, we had lunch in Apeiranthos, where we couldn’t resist “rosto,” a slow-cooked pork dish that lived up to the hype. A coastal drive took us to Apollonas Beach, where we cooled off in the water before the final stop, the Kouros of Apollonas, a huge statue abandoned mid-carving 2,500 years ago. Seeing it up close, still lying where sculptors left it, was a striking reminder of the island’s past!
For history lovers, foodies, or anyone wanting to experience Naxos’ laid-back charm, this trip has it all, without the hassle of planning.

Dinner – Sarris Tavern

After your full-day island tour wraps up around 5:00 pm, we’d head back to the hotel for a quick shower and a little downtime, then aim for dinner around 7:30 pm when you’re properly hungry again. Sarris Tavern is an easy pick on night one because it’s right near the Naxos Town waterfront, so you can keep logistics simple after a big day out exploring.
This is the kind of place we’d go when we want classic Greek taverna food done really well, especially if you’re craving seafood. We’d start by checking out the fresh fish and seafood options, then add a couple of plates for the table. Their menu also has great non-seafood staples, including chicken souvlaki, plus a more traditional option, the baked lamb with ouzo, tomatoes, and kefalotyri cheese!
It’s popular for a reason, so if you’re visiting in peak season, it’s worth booking ahead. They also tend to stay open late (often until midnight), which is perfect since you are not rushing to squeeze everything in tonight.
Evening – Get lost in the lantern-lit lanes of the Old Market

After dinner at Sarris Tavern, now is the time to keep things easy and head straight into the Old Market, which is tucked within the old castle walls and is full of narrow lanes lined with little shops and pretty stone archways. It’s an easy, 5-minute walk from Sarris.
From there, we recommend slowly winding uphill into the Kastro, the Venetian-era castle district built in the early 1200s. Now is the perfect time to enjoy how different it feels at night when the alleys are quieter and the air finally cools down!
It’s best to give yourself about an hour to wander without a plan, then wrap up whenever you’re ready. After a busy day, this is one of those simple nights that is all about soaking up Naxos Town at its most atmospheric!

Day 2
Morning/Afternoon – Cruise the Aegean on a luxury catamaran

There’s something about being out on the water that makes you instantly forget about everything else, and this catamaran tour delivered that feeling from the very start.
After grabbing a quick breakfast at the hotel, we arrived at the meeting point at 9:10 am, and the crew was ready with warm smiles and a rundown of the day’s plan. Within minutes, we were sailing into the endless blue of the Aegean, the gentle sway of the boat already slowing the pace of the morning.
Our first stop had us jumping straight into crystal-clear waters so transparent we could see the rocky seabed below. Schools of fish darted in and out of view as we swam and snorkeled, completely immersed in the calm.

Between stops, we stretched out on the deck, letting the sun dry our skin while sipping ice-cold drinks. The crew was fantastic—always on hand with a refill, a snack, or to capture the perfect mid-air photo as someone leapt from the boat.
By lunchtime, appetites were big, and the freshly prepared spread was a highlight—crisp Greek salads, warm bread, and slow-cooked local dishes that tasted even better with the sea breeze. Seven hours passed effortlessly, and by the time we sailed back to Naxos around 4:30 pm, it felt like we’d lived an entire vacation in just one day!

Late afternoon – Relax or explore Naxos

After a full day soaking up the sun and sea air, this is the perfect time to slow things down. You might want to head back to your hotel for a shower, a quick rest, and a change of clothes before the evening ahead. There’s something satisfying about slipping into fresh clothes after a day on the water.
If you’re still feeling energized, use this time to check out any Naxos Town spots you missed yesterday afternoon. You could browse a few more artisan shops, wander the whitewashed alleys near the Old Market, or grab a relaxed drink by the waterfront as the golden light hits the harbor. Whether you choose to recharge or keep exploring, this window between the sailing trip and dinner is a great chance to set the pace for your evening.
Dinner – Irini’s Restaurant

When you’re ready for dinner, make your way to Irini’s Restaurant, a charming family-run taverna just a short walk from the waterfront. The atmosphere here is relaxed and welcoming, with outdoor tables set right along the seafront—perfect for enjoying the calm evening air.
The menu celebrates fresh local flavors, from grilled octopus and the catch of the day to classic meze dishes that are perfect for sharing. Portions are generous, the service is friendly, and everything feels unhurried, making it easy to linger over your meal. While you don’t need a reservation, it’s worth arriving a little early to avoid a wait, especially during summer.
Evening – Stroll to the Portara at golden hour

After dinner, take a leisurely 10–15-minute walk along the waterfront to reach the Portara, the iconic marble doorway of the ancient Temple of Apollo. Perched on a small islet connected to Naxos Town by a narrow causeway, it’s especially beautiful at golden hour, when the sun begins to sink toward the horizon. From here, you’ll have sweeping views over the Aegean Sea and the whitewashed town behind you. It’s a relaxed yet memorable way to end the evening—watching the sky turn shades of pink and gold before making your way back through the softly lit streets of Naxos Town.
Day 3
Breakfast – Naxaki Beach Lounge Bar & Restaurant

Ease into your final day in Naxos with breakfast at Naxaki Beach Lounge Bar & Restaurant, opening right at 9 am. Arriving when they open means you can enjoy a relaxed meal before heading straight to the beach. The menu has plenty to tempt you—fresh fruit bowls, fluffy omelets, buttery pastries, and refreshing smoothies, all perfect for fueling a lazy morning by the water.
The setting couldn’t be better. Think white cushions, palm-covered umbrellas, and uninterrupted Aegean views, with the sound of gentle waves just steps away. Best of all, you’re right next to Agios Georgios Beach, so once breakfast wraps up, you can claim a sunny spot and spend the morning swimming or simply soaking up the atmosphere. Bring a towel and your swimwear—you might find it hard to leave this stretch of sand once you’ve settled in!
Morning – Relax and recharge at Agios Georgios Beach (St. George Beach)

Just steps from your breakfast spot, Agios Georgios Beach offers the perfect mix of comfort and classic island charm. Its calm, shallow waters and soft golden sand make it especially appealing for older travelers or anyone looking for a gentle start to the day. The atmosphere here is laid-back, with just enough activity to feel lively without being crowded.
You can rent a lounger and spend a couple of hours alternating between dips in the sea and lounging in the shade with a good book. The sea breeze keeps things comfortable, even on warmer days, and the sound of the waves is the perfect backdrop for pure relaxation.
Whether you choose to take a swim or simply stretch out under a palm umbrella, this is your final chance to enjoy the Aegean at an unhurried pace. Plan to spend about two to three hours here before heading into town for some shopping and lunch.
Early afternoon – Wander back into town for some souvenir shopping

After a leisurely morning at the beach, take the short 5–10-minute stroll back into Naxos Town for a final round of souvenir shopping. This is the perfect time to pick up local specialties like wedges of Naxian cheese, bottles of golden olive oil, or the island’s signature Kitron liqueur, ideal as gifts or as tasty reminders of your trip.
In the backstreets of the Old Market, you’ll also find handmade ceramics, woven textiles, and unique jewelry, with narrow whitewashed alleys that are a delight to explore.
If you’re feeling a little peckish before lunch, then we highly recommend dropping by Artοποιώ Bakery, which serves a delicious mix of sweet and savory snacks. Chocolat Cafe Creperie is another amazing option for a sweet treat (open seasonally!).
Lunch – Scirocco

For your final lunch in Naxos, head to Scirocco, a lively, family-run taverna known for its warm atmosphere and generous portions. The menu is packed with local favorites, but the standout here has to be the Naxian potatoes, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and full of flavor. Pair them with fresh salads, grilled meats, or one of the day’s specials for a satisfying meal that will keep you fueled for the afternoon.
Aim to sit down around 1 pm so you have time to enjoy a leisurely lunch before your last tour of the trip. If you find yourself with a little extra time afterward, you can always wander back through the nearby streets for some last-minute local shopping. It’s a great way to savor your final hours in Naxos before the evening’s cooking class.
Scirocco is open seasonally from early April to late October. If you’re visiting outside of the season, another alternative we highly recommend is Maros’ Taverna, which is right around the corner and full of local feel (and delicious food!).
Late afternoon – A delicious afternoon in a Naxian village kitchen

Sharing a meal is one of the most memorable ways to connect with a place, and this small-group cooking class in a traditional Naxos village was a true deep dive into local flavors and traditions. The lesson kicks off at 3:30 pm and goes for about four hours, so with the 20-minute ride back, you’ll be in town by around 8 pm. You can sort transport through the tour or just grab a taxi from Naxos Town.
From the moment we arrived, our host, Yacob, and his family greeted us like old friends, making the experience feel more like an afternoon with family than a formal class. Before stepping into the kitchen, we took a short walk along the river and through the village gardens, picking fresh vegetables and fragrant herbs for our recipes. Yacob explained why Naxian produce is so flavorful, pointing out the unique conditions that make it special.

Back in the kitchen, we rolled up our sleeves and got hands-on with traditional Greek dishes—chopping vegetables, stirring pots, and even making cheese with the villagers. The pace was relaxed, giving us time to learn, laugh, and share stories.
The evening ended with everyone gathered around a long table, enjoying the dishes we had prepared, paired with local drinks and music. Every bite carried the essence of Naxos, made richer by the warmth and camaraderie of the group. Just check out HUNDREDS of 5-star reviews here to see why this cooking class is such a hit!

Evening – Raise a glass to your last night at Avaton 1739

End your time in Naxos on a high note at Avaton 1739, a rooftop bar perched above Naxos Town with sweeping views over the harbor, the maze of rooftops, and the deep blue of the Aegean. The setting is effortlessly romantic, whether you’re catching the last glow of sunset or sipping under the stars.
Order a creative drink, sink into your seat, and let the island’s beauty sink in one last time. The atmosphere is relaxed but lively enough to feel special, making it a perfect spot to reflect on the past three days. Since it’s open until the early morning, there’s no need to rush, stay for a second round, take in the cool night air, and watch the lights of the town shimmer below.
Avaton 1739 is open seasonally from early May to late October. If it’s not open during your visit, we recommend HURMAS, which is located right on the seafront with incredible views!

Renting a Car in Europe

Exploring Europe by car is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems—think charming villages, scenic countryside, and off-the-beaten-path spots that trains and buses might miss. Driving here is generally straightforward, but it’s good to be prepared for some regional quirks.
We always use Discover Cars to book our rentals and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find automatic cars (which can be tricky in Europe!), and add affordable full coverage insurance. What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
